COUNTERBALANCE

2010

SOLD. Welded steel sheet, lead counterweight, distressed paint finish

7' (2.1m) tall

‘Counterbalance’ was initially intended to be recumbent. After experimentally standing it vertically and enjoying a greater sense of presence and dynamism, I decided it should stand. Since this sculpture, most of my work enjoys a vertical bias, playing with gravity, balance and my desire to unnerve the viewer somewhat. Bravely, its owners placed it precariously, hovering over their bath in central London.
